Elon Musk asked Mark Zuckerberg if he would join him in bidding for OpenAI's intellectual property before making his 97.4 billion dollar unsolicited offer in February 2025, newly unsealed court documents reveal .

The text exchange began when Zuckerberg reached out to praise Musk's DOGE work at 10:04 PM on February 3, 2025. "Looks like DOGE is making progress," Zuckerberg wrote, adding that his teams would be "on alert to take down content doxxing or threatening" people working with Musk . Less than 30 minutes later, Musk responded with a heart emoji and asked: "Are you open to the idea of bidding on the OpenAI IP with me and some others?" Zuckerberg replied, "Want to discuss live?" .

Musk said he would "call in the morning," though it is unclear if the call actually happened . Neither Zuckerberg nor Meta signed the letter of intent or made a bid . OpenAI completed its for-profit conversion in October 2025, and Musk's lawsuit against Sam Altman now seeks up to 134 billion dollars in damages .

The same tech rivals who once challenged each other to a cage match were almost business partners. Almost.
