Meta just asked a California judge to throw out the landmark social media addiction verdict that found the company liable for a young woman's depression. The jury awarded 4.2 million dollars in damages to the plaintiff known as Kaley G.M. after concluding Meta's platform designs like infinite scroll and autoplay caused her mental health harm.

Meta argues Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act should shield it from liability because the harm came from content she viewed not design features. Lower courts have largely rejected this argument but experts say the interpretation could become a key feature of any appeal. The same judge previously denied Meta's request to delay posting a bond for the damages calling the company's financial resources massive.
